There are many plants used for hydroponics, some of them are much more profitable to grow on a hydroponic farm than on traditional soil, an example could be lettuce that needs a lot of water. Different other plants for hydroponics ca be found to be as productive as on classical methods, but you must realize that not any kind of crop can be grown on a hydroponic farm. This is why a good evaluation is required before replacing soil cultivation. Almost all the plants for hydroponics can be grown on soil terrain with similar results, problems appear when soil doesn’t allow vegetable growing.

Do plants for hydroponics have special growth requirements?

Any plant regardless of the growing medium has certain needs to grow. Plus, there are also many elements that adjust the growing factors. Parameters like air, water, light are universal, plants for hydroponics respects these principles. The difference is that if a plant always has enough nutriments at its root, it won’t concentrate in developing its root, and the entire energy will be focused on blooming and fruit giving. Thus plants for hydroponics are not chosen because they are resistant, but thanks to their capacity to produce a larger crop if they are properly fed on nutrients.

Another common factor that plants for hydroponics and plants in regular cultures have is the air movement. The air circulation will ensure that the plant receives the needed amount of carbon dioxide. The indoor hydroponic systems use all sorts of ventilation methods to replace the air inside, thus preserving the good health of the plants.

If you want to choose plants for hydroponics farming you should be well informed about each plant nutrient and mineral requirements, owing to the fact that the combination of the two is the most important element in the hydroponic system. In gardening or agriculture many minerals are not used in the classical fertilizers because the soil already has a sufficient quantity, hence a surplus won’t be necessary.

In the hydroponic system you have to provide all the resources necessary to the plant or else you risk losing the crops or getting poor quality products. So keep in mind not to use soil fertilizers in a hydroponic environment. Plants for hydroponics systems must be treated with solutions that have a pH varying between five and six, also pay attention to the evolution of the plants in the various stages.

Further on plants choice for hydroponics

Plants for hydroponics are more exposed and fragile to variations in the amount of chemicals in the nutrient solution. Maybe in the classical method the soil helps diluting the chemicals avoiding the root being burned, but here you may risk exposing the plant roots directly to hostile action. So if you are not an expert try choosing a plant more resistant to chemical variations or use ready-made nutrient solutions.

Would you like a more natural alternative to using those plastic planter containers? Well, here is a project for you, where you can have an interesting planter during the growing season, then throw the container out in the garden for mulch, without having to add to the world’s landfill problems.

These planters can be used and grown anywhere you can provide good plant growing conditions, including on a patio, pathway or even a roof top. The main criteria being enough sunlight for the plants chosen, easy access to water and an ease of access to maintain the planter/s.

Just follow the steps below.

What you will need

· One or more rectangular bales of hay, (One per planter).

· 4 to 8 seedlings or small plants per planter.

· One to two good handfuls of soil/compost/potting mix per plant.

· Small garden handtools.

· Hose/watering can.

· Liquid fertilizer.

· Area chosen to provide enough light for growing conditions required by plants selected.

Steps

Take one rectangular bale of hay; flip it on its side so that the straps are around the sides not over the top and bottom.

Moisten the hay bale thoroughly with a hose or watering can.

Using the handle of a hand tool, dig four to eight holes in the new upper surface of the hay bale, these holes have to be big enough to hold a good handful of soil.

Into each hole, place a handful or two of compost, soil or potting mix.

Plant up your choice of annuals, herbs or short-lived perennials.

· Water the plants in well and fertilize them with a liquid fertilizer.

· Because of the air gaps in the hay, this type of planter can dry out more quickly than a normal planter, so regular watering is essential.

· Also remember that your planter is actually decomposing while you are using it so remember to regularly fertilize the plants growing in it. Because nutrients may become temporarily unavailable during the decomposition process.

After you have finished growing your plants, move it out to the garden, take the straps off the bale, and use it to mulch/fertilize a part of your garden. You will find that the centre of the bale has decomposed into compost nicely by this stage.

A great way to decorate your garden is the use of vines. They are very low maintenance and look good on almost anything. If you’ve got a fence or separator that really stands out in the field of green that is your garden, then growing a vine over it can be a quick and aesthetically pleasing solution. However, there are many types of vines for different situations, whether you are trying to grow it up the side of a house, along the ground, or up a tree.

Many different ground vines are available. These types grow fast and strong, and just inch their ways along the ground. They are very easy to direct, so they can make a border around your garden, or just weave in and out of the plants. I suggest using these as a hardy ground cover if you just want some green on your dirt or mulch. Usually you can find a variety that is resistant to being stepped on. It’s like a leafy, nice alternative to grass. Even if you have kids and a dog, it should have no problems staying alive.

Another type of vine that is available is a “twining” vine. This refers to their method of climbing. Twining vines require a lattice or equally porous surface to climb up, since they are not sticky at all. They just climb by sending out small tendrils to loop around whatever is nearby. I suggest using this type of vine for climbing up trees, or any type of mesh. Usually you have to guide them a lot more during their early stages, and after that they will go wherever you want them to.

Vines not only look good on the ground or on lattices, you can blend them in to the very architecture of your house. This is usually achieved through the use of vines with small tendrils that have adhesive tips. They extend from the vine and attach themselves to almost any surface. If your garden is adjacent to your house and you want something to camouflage the big unsightly wall, it’s a great idea to start out a few vines near the base. If you have a vine like the Virginia Creeper growing, then your entire wall will be covered in a matter of months. However I have seen situations where the vine got out of control. After that, you have no choice but to watch the vine take over your entire house.

One of the vines that you would probably recognize is Ivy. You see it around a lot, generally because it is so adaptable. Out of the types I mentioned above (ground, twining, and sticky pads), Ivy can fill in for pretty much anything. It makes a great ground cover, and will grow up about any surface you put it on. Although it grows quick and strong, I wouldn’t suggest growing it up your house. This is because recently, buildings which have had ivy for many years have found that it has been deteriorating the building.

So no matter what you want to do with a vine, you should have no problem getting it to grow. You should always do your research beforehand and find out about any negative qualities the vine has (such as its ability to destroy buildings, in Ivy’s case.)

NATURAL CONTROL OF FLOWERING PLANTS’ INSECT PESTS

Your flowers needs your utmost tender loving care in order to give you the beautiful flowers you desired. In this scenario, by looking at their conditions in the garden, you can check if they are free from any insect  damage.

How will you know they are secure and safe. By closely monitoring them everyday, you can be updated what particular pest  attacks your plants.

As a home gardener, you should always be on the lookout for possible solutions to your home garden’s health problems. Make this as your priority in order to succeed in your flower gardening business.

Planting the same type of flowering plants in your garden should be avoided  because they carry the same pests attackers. You’ll entail great loss if your flowers will be infected.

One way to minimize the attack of pests and diseases is to practice multiple cropping system. This means, planting different crops of different types.

This has been proven effective and also improves the soil condition, while lessen on your pesticides cost.

Another methods, and this is also very effective, is to include in your garden some insect repellant crops. If you’ll include these plant repellants in your multiple cropping system, you’ll double your gain against your production cost. They helps control destructive insect pests. They have a natural a natural smell that wards off insect pests.

Some examples of plant repellants…

Lemon grass. Plant them along the sides of the fence or as border plants. Marigold. Good as border plants. Plant them in between rows or plots. Neem tree. Plant them around your garden. They also serves as wind break. Cosmos. Plant them as border plants in between other flowers.

There are lots of these plant repellants in your country. Visit your local agriculture extension office in your area, and seek some advice for more information about some insecticides. Or send me your email at: www.crisramasasa.com for some additional information. I’m always ready to assist you in all the best I can.

Other natural control for common insect pests…

Chewing insect pests (hard or soft-bodied). Mash 10 gloves of  garlic or a medium size onion. Mix with 2 quarts/liter of water. Let sits for a while. Strain to remove impurities. Immediately spray without diluting the solution. To make it more stronger especially for hard-bodied insects, add 30 pieces cayenne/hot pepper. This is effective against nematodes.

Caution: Hot pepper is irritating to the eyes. Use protective eye cover when using them.

Sucking insect pests (hard or soft bodied). Melt ½ bar bath soap (not detergent soap) in 8 quarts or 1 liter water. When totally dissolved, immediately spray directly to the insect pests. For hard-bodied, add 2 teaspoon salt and about 30 pieces cayenne/hot pepper. Aphids and red ants. I personally used this mixture, and its proven effective. Soak 1-2 dried tobacco leaves overnight in 1 liter of water. Strain and mix 2 teaspoons powder soap (any powder soap is ok). Spray directly into the ants or aphids. This mixture can also be used for hard-bodied insect pests with the additional mixture of 20-30 pieces powdered hot pepper.

Follow the same precautionary measures for chewing insects when  using hot pepper to protect eyes.

By using the natural control, you’re protecting our environment reduce chemical pollution and poisoning which is the major cause of human and animal illness worldwide.

If you can control it, avoid using chemical insecticides at all cost if you can go on the natural way of controlling pests.

Back in antiquity, Aristotle called them the “intestines of the Earth,” but it took several more centuries before earthworms were systematically studied — by Charles Darwin who wrote a whole book on the importance of worms in breaking down dead organic matter, enhancing soil structure, and maintaining soil aeration, drainage and fertility. Darwin calculated that earthworms in the soil add about eleven tonnes of organic matter per acre (about 18 tonnes per hectare) each year; modern scientists believe that where worms abound they can move up to 250 tonnes per hectare per year.

According to Darwin, earthworms have an acid reaction in the upper part of their digestive canal which affects the soil and organic matter passing through the canal. Calciferous glands in their gut secrete carbonates of lime, which slowly neutralise the acidic particles and eventually change the reaction to alkaline as the transiting soil reaches the lower part of the digestive canal. As earthworms feed, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in organic matter progressively declines. Nitrogen is converted into more usable ammonium or nitrate forms; phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients are also converted into readily available forms.

As various kinds of mineral and organic particles pass through the earthworm digestive canal, they get mixed very close together to form aggregates, which improve the drainage and moisture-carrying capacity of the soil. These organic matter-mineral aggregates have great water stability and enhance other characteristics of the soil. Various investigators believe that as much as 50% of aggregates found in surface layers of the soil come from earthworms.

In addition to aggregates, earthworms also play very important roles in forming soils, improving soil structure and enhancing its physical characteristics. Modern agriculture utilises earthworm products in various ways.

Worm composting

Also called ‘vermiculture,’ the term refers to the production of humus from organic matter by using a combination of microorganisms and earthworms. Unlike other composting processes, worm composting does not require heat to degrade and stabilize organic material; instead, it makes use of intimate interactions between the earthworms and the microbes that live in their intestinal tract and in the organic material. Worm composting yields two economically valuable products — vermi-cast and vermi-meal.

Earthworm casts consist of remains of digested organic matter, mucous and nitrogen-derived substances. The texture of these casts is finer than can be found in traditionally composted wastes. Vermi-cast is superior to inorganic fertilisers in its ability to provide growth nutrients. Apart from the normal N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) contents, vermi-cast delivers enzymes, beneficial microbes, and growth hormones. Vermi-meal is a protein-rich meal made from ground earthworm meat. Its protein content is about 62% with 11% fat. It can be used as an ingredient for animal feeds.

Worm juice

Worm juice is a special product from earthworms. It also contains some N-P-K, but its major benefit comes from its plentiful supply of nitrogen-fixing bacteria (about 100,000 CFU/ml), trace elements, and minerals all mixed in an aerated liquid and immediately available to the plant. Usually applied at the rate of 10 litres per hectare, worm juice helps the soil regain its natural capacity to provide plants with the nutrients they need in readily available form. It is also used as a foliar spray and as dressing on seed coats to increase germination rates.

Worm compost tea

Also known simply as ‘worm tea,’ this nutrient solution is a liquefied form of vermi-cast produced from worm composting, further enriched with minerals, essential plant nutrients, and all the various microorganisms so necessary to soil health and enhanced plant growth. Application is easy but it is important that worm tea be applied within 4 hours after the solution is activated. Worm tea is usually applied on the soil, plant leaves, and mulch to promote soil health.

Continued use of earthworms and earthworm products will help you eliminate inorganic fertilisers and other chemicals in your farm.

Skunks are a nuisance.  They are nocturnal, coming out in the evening and at night to see what you have got laid out for them to eat.  They make a mess with your trash and seem to get into everything.  Not to mention that horrible smell of skunk spray that finds it’s way into your house just as you are settling in for the night.  And, remember that skunks have been known to carry rabies.  You need to get rif of all of the things that a skunk can eat in your yard.  So, you may be wondering, “what do skunks eat“?

If you rid your yard of things that skunks look for, it will aid you in your efforts to keep skunks away.  With a few simple steps, you can make it less attractive for a skunk to visit your house and yard.

Skunks are opportunistic feeders.  They take advantage of any opportunity to eat that presents itself.  Here is a list of some of the common things that skunks eat:

*  Mice ( OK, here is one good thing about skunks!)

*  Rats

*  Birds

*  Eggs

*  Roaches

*  Grubs (this is why they are often seen in your garden!)

*  Bees

*  Frogs

*  Small rabbits

*  Unsecured trash (make sure that lid is tight)

*  Pet food (pick up your pet’s food and water dishes each evening)

*  Crickets

*  Grasshoppers

It is best if you remove all of the things from your yard and the surrounding area that you know skunks eat.  If you take care of all of the things mentioned above, and anything that you encounter while looking for things that may encourage a skunk to visit your yard, you will be well on your way to sending the skunk down the road to find a better place to dine!

Few homes stir the typical notion of lush gardens that an English cottage house plan can invoke. English cottage house plans bring to mind storybook fantasies of roses covering a trellis and climbing on thatched roofs. However, thatched roofs aren’t practical or allowed construction material in many places. But for those who think the best part of the home is the garden, an English cottage house could be a dream home.

Beautiful English cottage house plans cry out for well designed landscaping plans that match the cottage feel you are trying to attain. Custom gardens designed by a professional landscaper will complete the English cottage charm. Professional landscaping plans will assure you that the garden plants are well suited to the climate and housing style. However, cost may be a stumbling block as landscapers tend to be quite expensive.

Pre-designed garden plans can be adjusted for your property and this type of approach is more affordable. The downside is that pre-designed garden plans won’t give you the customized look you are seeking. But, if gardening is a beloved hobby for you, then consider designing custom garden plans yourself to match your English cottage house plans. Designing your own custom garden plan would be a time consuming task, but no one else would have a garden like yours.

Begin with an aerial drawing the property. Use the house placement as your starting point. Gardening magazines and books can give you lots of ideas. Study garden themes such as rock gardens, herb gardens and shade gardens. You can also research design principles such as symmetry, color and height coordination.

When all is said and done, the choice is still up to you. Build your English garden to match your English cottage house plans the way you see it in your mind and the result will be perfect as long as you like what you see.
